South Cobb Commissioner Lisa Cupid announced Tuesday that she will be running to lead the board as chair in 2020.

The announcement, posted on Facebook, thanked her constituents for their support over her seven years on the board and unveiled her campaign under the slogan “Cobb forward, Cobb for all.”

“Cobb County is on the move,” she wrote. “We have an opportunity to embrace what is to come and continue to make our county the best place in Georgia to live, work and play. We cannot allow the comfort of the present to scare us from the possibilities of tomorrow.”

Cupid is the only Democrat on the board in a historically conservative county that is increasingly competitive for her party.

The current commission chair, Mike Boyce, a Republican, said through a spokesman that he had no comment and would seek reelection in 2020.

Donald Trump's administration deployed the military to Washington, D.C., in the name of fighting crime, and in an Aug. 11 news conference he mentioned the possibility of military being sent to other large American cities, all of which are led by Black, Democratic mayors. And while Atlanta wasn't included in Trump's list, the city fits that profile under Mayor Andre Dickens. (Photo Illustration: Philip Robibero / AJC | Source: Getty)
