Mike Boyce, a retired officer in the U.S. Marine Corps., filed paperwork Tuesday to run for election against Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee in 2016.

Boyce, 64, ran a failed campaign against Lee in 2012.

“We’re officially in,” said Boyce, who has been exploring a run for the county’s top political office for about two months. “I can begin collecting money now.”

Boyce, who retired as a Colonel, received 18 military decorations during his 30-year career. He was recognized by the State Department for his role in the Kurdish Relief after the first Gulf War, and served as a senior member of a Pentagon team that managed a $22 billion budget.

After retirement from the military, Boyce worked for two large financial consulting companies: Booz Allen Hamilton and Grant Thornton.

Lee has previously announced his intention to seek re-election.
