Q: Have you heard of a small town in Alabama famous for its smoked turkey? It's the best I have ever had and I forgot the name of the town. We stopped there on the way to Mobile. Thank you. — Donna S. Timmers, Atlanta
A: It sounds as if you're talking about Greenville, where you'll find Bates House of Turkey Restaurant. While the restaurant is in Greenville, Bates turkey farm is located 13 miles north in Fort Deposit, Ala. This family-owned enterprise got its start in 1923 with a wedding gift of nine turkey eggs. Turkeys at the farm are grown under the shade of pecan trees and are fed an all-vegetable feed. The restaurant offers a wide variety of turkey products that you can eat in or take home. Bates also features a catalog loaded with hickory smoked whole turkey and honey glazed boneless turkey breasts to turkey and pecan pie and turkey breast and Tupelo honey combos. There's also turkey jerky. The restaurant is located at 1001 Fort Dale Road, Greenville, Ala., 334-382-6123. For more information, check out the website at www.batesturkey.com.
Q: I cannot find the One Touch battery-operated can opener. There are many copy cats but they don't work. Walmart and Bed, Bath and Beyond can't tell me why they don't get them anymore. I know quite a few people who are looking for them. Thanks. — Joan Barlow, Decatur
A: Joan, the One Touch can opener is an old timer and part of the As Seen on TV group of products. It’s still available online and, locally, you can get it from the warehouse that sells the opener to online stores as well as to brick and mortar establishments. However, when I spoke to a representative at TVTime Direct As Seen on TV Products, 3641 Pierce Drive, Chamblee, 770-936-9424, I learned that the One Touch opener isn’t very reliable and the returns are through the roof. However, you can take your chances and buy the opener for $19.99. The company also sells a very similar opener, the JML Hands Free can opener, which also is battery operated, but this one is supposed to perform much better, and the return rate is minimal. Another bonus is that JML sells for only $14.99. You can pick up the can opener you like at TVTime Direct, but note that this is a warehouse, not a retail store. It’s open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Q: I'm looking for those one-blade disposable razors. I think they were made by Bic and had black handles. My son loves these. Thank you so much. — Marlene Lawson, email
A: Marlene, I found Bic Sensitive single-blade, disposable shavers in packages of a dozen (10 plus two bonus), for $2.75 at Dollar General, 2846 Lavista Road, Decatur, 404-634-0770. These don’t have black handles, they’re made of orange plastic but, otherwise, they sound like the razors your son prefers.
Q: For years I could find the furniture polish recommended for my walnut furniture at House of Denmark, now out of business. It is called Scand-Oil. Do you know where I might find it or something similar? — Marcia Epstein, Atlanta
A: Scand-Oil by Furbishments Inc. is a mild, non-toxic wood cream first produced in 1950 by Joanne Lancaster, who wanted a polish that made caring for furniture a pleasant experience. While Lancaster recently passed away, the family-run business continues to offer Scand-Oil. Although it’s not currently in Atlanta area stores, you can order the polish directly from Furbishments by calling 802-869-2155. It’s available in 12-ounce bottles for $11.50, and 32-ounce bottles cost $22.50.
