Judy Russell, also known as the Legal Genealogist because of her expertise in both genealogy and the law, will be the featured speaker at the Augusta Genealogical Society’s annual Homecoming Seminar.
The nationally known lecturer will give talks on four topics at the August 4 event: how to handle family secrets; finding information without vital records; verifying information with DNA; and how to conduct an exhaustive search, in which she checks off all the items you should be finding and evaluating in order for you to say you have covered all the territory.
The seminar begins with registration at 8 a. m. followed by the lectures from 9 a.m. until 4 p. m. It will be held at the First Baptist Church of Augusta, 3500 Walton Way Extension. This is a good chance to hear a national expert without traveling to a conference. Cost (including lunch and syllabus) is $50 for members, $55 for non-members. Checks should be sent by July 27 to Augusta Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 3743, Augusta, Ga., 30914-3743. To pay online and to learn more about the seminar, go to augustagensociety.org. See the speaker’s blog at www.legalgenealogist.com.
Tad Evans, prolific Georgia newspaper abstractor, dies in Savannah
Tad Evans, known for his hundreds of volumes of Georgia newspaper abstracts, died June 23 in Savannah at age 89. His efforts, many in conjunction with his daughter Elizabeth Kilbourne, have produced some of the most important reference works for Georgia historians and genealogists. He received grants from the R. J. Taylor Jr. Foundation for many of these. Georgia is a lucky state to have this much “raw” material published. To see his works, check any Genealogy Room in Georgia libraries or the Georgia Archives. Many of my greatest genealogy finds have been through these newspaper volumes. For those still available, see GeorgiaGenealogy.net.
Gwinnett County library system adds genealogy databases
Good news from Gwinnett County. The library system has just added several important genealogy databases to its genealogy catalog. While the library system already had available Ancestry Library Edition, and HeritageQuest, they have now added Findmypast, Fold3 and Gale Genealogy Connect. So readers in Gwinnett, let your county commissioners know you appreciate access to these additional genealogy databases at your public libraries.
