The lavender sink and shower tile in the master bathroom had to go, but Nancy Darden wasn’t so sure about her designer’s plans for the great room in her Avondale Estates home. Designer Jessica Capallo suggested painting and glazing the exposed brick and walnut mantle.
“It was a big trust factor,” Darden said. “Jessica really changed the flavor of (the room) when she painted the brick.”
Capallo oversaw renovations, commissioned custom cabinets and doors, selected paint, fixtures and furniture, and updated some existing furniture.
“She just did a great job of taking the things that we had as well, as new things, and putting those together and making it work,” co-owner Lynn Thompson said.

Renovations: A complete kitchen renovation opened the kitchen to the family room and resulted in new custom-built cabinets, honed granite countertops, hammered copper farm sink, marble tile backsplash, Wolf gas cooktop and custom pantry doors and lighting. They updated two guest bathrooms with new tile, vanities and lighting. The master bath features an updated walk-in shower, soaker tub, new tile, vanities, lighting and custom doors. They removed flooring in the foyer and kitchen to continue hardwoods throughout the home.
Interior design style: Rustic modern
Favorite interior design elements: The combination of repurposed antiques, mixed metal and wood, custom millwork and doors, and plush upholstery with pops of color. "The color really comes from all of the accents — the lamps, the pillows, the artwork," Thompson said.
Favorite repurposed items: Thompson wanted to make sure that a set of chairs passed down from her mother was kept in the home. Capallo recovered them with a patterned fabric on the front and cream fabric on the back and darkened the stain of the wood.
Favorite outdoor feature: In the living room, a support beam was removed so that the custom doors could open to the porch for entertaining.
