Immutable fact No. 1: Kids get hungry. A lot.

Immutable fact No. 2: Parents fret over what to feed them.

Those between-meal snacks should be reasonably healthy — but they need to taste good, too.

Enter NatureBox, a subscription-based business touting 100-plus “wholesome” snacks. To this company, that means they contain no hydrogenated oils, no high-fructose corn syrup, no artificial colors, sweeteners or flavors and no added sulfites.

What do the snacks contain? Dried fruits, nuts and seeds, whole grains, dark chocolate, popcorn, dried veggies and more, turned into the likes of Chocolate Banana Chips, Pistachio Power Clusters, Blueberry Nom Noms, Sriracha Roasted Cashews and Guacamole Bites. Flavorwise, there seems to be something for everyone.

We put five NatureBox snacks to the taste test. Banana Bread Granola, Salted Caramel Pretzel Pops and a new offering, Mini Belgian Waffles, were all mildly sweet, with a nice crunch. (The granola was our favorite.)

Peanut Butter Nom Noms, dense little oaty, moist cookies, were satisfying but without any discernible peanut butter flavor. Dutch Cocoa Sun Crunch, a savory snack, tasted mostly of sunflower seeds; chocolate lovers, don’t let the word “cocoa” fool you.

These bags are labeled as having two to five servings but don’t say if they are kid- or adult-size servings.

Curious consumers can do their own tasting by signing up for a no-obligation free trial box with five snacks chosen by the company.

A NatureBox membership starts at $19.95 per month (shipping included), with the five snack bags chosen by the member. Customers who prepay for three months pay $17.95 a month; prepaying for six months knocks off another $1.

Separate listings at the website identify snack groups that are vegan, non-GMO or made without milk or soy or nuts or gluten. (More than half of the full line of snacks qualify in each group.)
