Woman attempts to go viral, ends up in handcuffs

From cooking chicken in NyQuil to licking toilet seats during COVID, some TikTok trends have landed people in the hospital. More recently though, a trend landed one user in a courtroom.

Earlier this week, the Grand Canyon National Park posted a screenshot to its Facebook page of a woman standing at the edge of the canyon and hitting a golf ball.

“Do we really need to say, ‘don’t hit golf balls into the Grand Canyon?’” asked the post.

Since the posting, the woman – Katie Sigmond — has been identified and located. She’s being charged with creating hazardous conditions, littering and throwing the objects into the canyon. Each charge can lead to a fine of $1,000.

Sigmond has a TikTok following of over 6 million and the post has been shared more than 100 times. While Sigmond is facing hefty fines, some users say that she should face more serious charges — or even be banned from National Parks.

Littering is prohibited at the Grand canyon and other major national parks. Violators face fines and imprisonment.

“Throwing objects over the rim of the canyon is not only illegal but can also endanger hikers and wildlife who may be below,” said park officials in their statement.
