It is hard to believe but Prince's film "Purple Rain" was released in July 1984, just a month after the hit soundtrack. Let's go crazy and enjoy a musical trip back in time.
The moody rock music drama has since become a cult classic, though at the time it received mixed reviews. Critics found the plot confusing and questioned some of the acting. In addition to Prince, the film starred Morris Day and the newcomer Apollonia Kotero. Both Vanity and Jennifer Beals were considered for the lead female role, but were unavailable so Kotero was given the opportunity.
"Purple Rain" was designed to showcase Prince's music, and the movie features multiple performance sequences.
The movie was filmed on location in Minneapolis, featuring many of the city's landmarks.
The Purple Army supported their beloved Prince and his movie, which rang up over $68 million at the box office, having just cost a little over $7 million to make.
The movie earned an Oscar for Best Original Song Score, and was nominated for a Razzie for worst new star (Apollonia).
A sequel, "Graffiti Bridge," was released in 1990.
