The name seems to signal the kind of restaurant where ladies lunch on dainty nibbles. But TINY Bistro specializes in hearty sandwiches, many made with hefty slabs of delicious house-roasted meats.

Figs & Honey

Hidden away in the back of a building on Marietta Street (near the intersections of Howell Mill and 8th Street), it appears that TINY suddenly sprouted amidst the recent Westside building boom, joining new neighbors like 5 Seasons Brewing Co. and Hop City. In fact, the catering side of the operation, now known as Figs and Honey, has been going for more than eight years in the same location.

"When the area started growing and getting nicer, we decided it was time to put a face to the catering company," says chef Robert Haan, who owns the business with his wife, Karen. "It's been a great way for us to meet everybody."

Indeed, TINY Bistro is a super friendly, laid-back place, where you can often find the Haans chatting with customers. The space is fittingly compact and quite spare, appointed with a couple of tables near the order counter, a deli case, and a side dining room adorned with a glowing pink mural.

"It's just kind of a goof," Haan says. "But we wanted it to be small and have a really good feel and some personality."

Sandwich sensations

Haan's menu, including a few daily specials, is posted on a blackboard-painted wall by the front door. Hot sandwiches come on airy pistolet bread from a New Orleans bakery, and most can be ordered in generous whole or bargain half sizes.

Among the offerings, the homey turkey meatloaf is a crowd-pleaser that Haan calls "crazy," because it's pressed with mashed potatoes, bacon and cheddar cheese. Other good bets include a classic Cuban made with sweet and spicy guava-Mojo Criollo pork loin, and a Reuben made with house-cured corned beef.

Cold sandwiches — free-range egg salad, pecan chicken salad or pimento cheese — come on a grilled croissant. You can also order up a Greek salad with olives artichokes and feta cheese or a BLT salad with blue cheese dressing. Healthy sides range from Mediterranean pasta and simple red potato salad to crispy broccoli salad and fresh fruit.

Takeaway and tastings, too

Daily, there's a selection of reasonably priced roasted meats, fish and dishes from the catering side, such as paella, that can be purchased a la carte and coupled with sides for a quick takeaway dinner. Later this month, look for a new series beer and wine pairing and tasting events, presented in conjunction with Hop City.
