Fast, casual Asian restaurants are nothing new, but Thai Squared in Alpharetta is out to surprise by combining quality ingredients and elegant presentations with fast service and reasonable prices.
Order at the counter, take a number, find a place to perch, and, almost immediately, your food arrives -- artfully plated on modern white china with a roll-up of silverware, delivered by a friendly server, eager to please.
The look: Located in the back of a shopping center on Windward Parkway, the storefront space is a study in minimalism. Contemporary chairs and blond wood tables topped with vases of single orange gerbera daisies create a Zen-like simplicity.
The scene: The Thai Squared logo uses the algebraic superscript for the number two. At lunch one day, most of the seats in the spare dining room seemed to be filled with well-dressed workers from Alpharetta's nearby high-tech companies. Laptops and business talk mixed with fresh basil rolls and green curry.
The menu: Offerings include the full range of Thai classics, from fried spring rolls ($2) and lemon grass soup ($4) to beef salad ($8) and noodle and rice dishes ($8-$11) with chicken, pork, tofu, beef or shrimp. Among the more unusual menu items, look for Thai Squared fries ($4), tempura-battered taro with Thai dipping sauce, and spicy spaghetti ($8), with veggies and tomato sauce.
The drinks: Thai Squared doesn't have beer or wine, but you get free refills with fountain sodas ($2) or iced tea ($2). And there's a variety of canned and bottled drinks, including Perrier ($2) and Thai iced coffee ($3).
The extras: In keeping with the speedy counter service, takeout orders are ready in 15 minutes or sooner. And right now, Thai Squared is the Costco restaurant of the month, giving customers with a Costco card up to $5 off.
