Open only since mid-September, Local 7 in Tucker already seems to be a big hit. The Main Street bar and restaurant is the newest concept from the group behind Matador Cantina in Oakhurst and Glenwood Park. But instead of Tex-Mex and tequila, it’s pub grub and beer.
The look: Situated in a vintage brick storefront across the street from Matthews Cafeteria, the main entrance is along a raised sidewalk, and there's parking and another entrance in back. Inside, the open dining room and long bar area are divided by a half wall. The refurbished space is accented with dark wood and exposed brick and a garage door that opens to a side patio.
The scene: One Friday afternoon, nearly every table in the place was occupied, and only a few seats were open at the bar. Servers scrambled to keep up with the crowd, but despite delays, the buzz was surprisingly convivial. As one man told the bartender, "It's really busy, but it shows we've needed a place like this."
The menu: The menu features burgers and sandwiches, with a few daily specials and entrees, such as roasted chicken ($12) and steak frites ($15), available after 4 p.m. The Local Club ($8.50) is layered with turkey, ham, bacon, Swiss cheese and chipotle mayo. Burgers range from the basic Local ($7.50) to the giant John Henry ($20), a "Man vs. Food" sort of challenge that dares you to down seven patties and seven slices of cheese topped with bacon and a fried egg.
The drinks: The full bar boasts a good selection of whiskey, and signature cocktails include the Country Lemonade ($6), with Jack Daniels, triple sec, Sprite and sour mix. Sweetwater IPA ($4.50) and New Belgium Belgo IPA ($5.50) were on a recent draft beer list, and there are a dozen wines by the glass.
The extras: A lunch special offered a half sandwich with a cup ($6) or bowl ($7.50) of soup. Sweets ($5) include an ice cream float, with root beer, cream soda or Mexican coke, and German chocolate cake or apple pie from Southern Sweets bakery.
