Dicky Doo’s Diner in Lawrenceville is one of those hidden-in-plain-sight places that’s easy to miss. But chowhounds might sniff it out by following the smoke signals wafting from the barbecue shack in back.
Located in a storefront next door to a gas station on Lawrenceville Highway, the friendly Southern cooking spot serves breakfast six days a week, meat-and-two-sides plate lunches, plus sandwiches and burgers.
The look: The simple space is anchored by an open kitchen, an order counter and a glass-enclosed steam table, where the daily specials and sides are displayed. Shelves with old photos, album covers, flea market knickknacks and jars of homemade pickles create a country store kind of atmosphere.
The scene: Owner and pit master Dicky Parks lives in the area and is known for his barbecue and catering. But so far, breakfast is the busy time at Dicky Doo’s, as regulars gather at oilcloth-topped tables for morning coffee and conversation, along with the likes of biscuits and gravy, country ham and red-hot link sausage.
The menu: Southern fried chicken ($6.49) and a pulled pork platter ($7.49) with two sides and a biscuit or corn bread are on the menu every day. But daily specials might include country fried steak, beef brisket, pork chops, and turkey and dressing. Mac and cheese, squash casserole topped with Ritz crackers, turnip greens and fried okra are among the popular sides.
The drinks: Of course, there’s super sweet tea with endless refills, as well as fountain drinks, no-nonsense diner-style coffee, milk and orange juice.
The extras: On Fridays and Saturdays, Parks offers “Dicky Doo’s Famous Ribs” for $11.99 a half rack or $18.99 a full rack with two sides. The everyday family special ($19.99) is a pound of pulled pork, two pint-size sides and homemade bread. There’s a kids menu ($1.50-$3.50), and look for daily dessert selections.
