Bluefin is among that stylish persuasion of places that manage to feel upscale and casual at the same time, with an aura analogous to the lounge restaurants that dot the West Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard landscape. And Los Angeles style is evoked again in the sushi-centered Japanese fusion food and kicky libations.

Cool blue glow

The restaurant is situated in the Brookwood neighborhood, a few doors from Cafe Intermezzo, fronting bustling Peachtree Road. Inside, the atmosphere is softly sophisticated, with cool blue walls that emit a calming glow, and plush, cream-colored leather seating. Both the sushi bar and side cocktail bar area are appointed with glistening glass and steel.

On weekday afternoons, the dining room is usually filled with groups of office workers and business people, as well as folks who have discovered the bargain-priced lunch specials. Especially late on weekend nights, the scene is set for sipping drinks and sampling from the big selection of sushi and sashimi.

Afternoon deals

The lunch menu features one of the better meal deals around. For $9.95, you choose two items from a long list of rolls and Japanese dishes, served with a crispy house salad. Among the elegantly presented offerings, the lightly seared tuna is wrapped in sesame seeds and drizzled with tangy peanut sauce; mixed tempura has crunchy, panko-coated shrimp and battered veggies; a generous portion of marinated beef is sauteed in garlic sauce and served with leaf lettuce. Among the wild-style rolls, the Hurricane is a fried melange of spicy crawfish tails, crab stick, cream cheese and remoulade-like mayo; the Double Punch has cooked shrimp, avocado, cucumber, spicy mayo, masago, crab stick and tempura flakes.

Dinner dilemmas

The sprawling dinner menu presents so many choices, with so many price points, it quickly becomes confusing. Early evening and late night Cool Down specials include sushi, seafood, steaks and even pizza. Entrees range from a 22-ounce bone-in rib-eye steak ($30) to grilled sea bass with nantua (crawfish) sauce ($26) and the Bluefin sushi dinner ($29). That may be why so many folks simply go for the raw fish and inventive rolls.
