"Rock of Ages" star Tom Cruise and actress Katie Holmes are calling it quits.

Cruise and Holmes are divorcing after five years of marriage, Cruise appeared to confirm to People magazine Friday. In a statement to People, Cruise said he is "deeply saddened" and is "concentrating on his three children."

Holmes' attorney called it a "personal and private matter."

"Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest," attorney Jonathan Wolfe told People.

Cruise and Holmes, 33, have a 6-year-old daughter, Suri. Cruise also has two children from his marriage to actress Nicole Kidman.

TMZ reported that it was Holmes who filed for divorce in New York on June 28 and that Cruise was "blindsided" by the action. The entertainment site, citing court documents, said Holmes cited "irreconcilable differences" and is asking for sole legal custody and "primary residential custody" of Suri.

Cruise, 49, is starring in "Rock of Ages," a comedy musical film that is an adaptation of the 2006 rock jukebox Broadway musical of the same name.

CBS noted that in the June issue of Playboy, Cruise gushed over Holmes, calling her "an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you'd see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. She's funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better."

During an interview on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 2005, Cruise jumped up and down on the interview couch while talking about Holmes, taking many, including the host, by surprise. They married a year later in Italy.

The couple's net worth is estimated at $275 million, and TMZ reports there is a prenuptial agreement.

Holmes appeared on the TV teen drama "Dawson's Creek" from 1998 to 2003. She also had a starring role in the 2005 movie "Batman Begins" and has appeared on Broadway.

Cruise was also married to actress Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990.
