Patrick McDermott, the former boyfriend of singer Olivia Newton John who disappeared during a night fishing trip five years ago, is alive and well, according to published reports.

Private detectives hired by NBC Dateline searching for McDermott say they have proof he's alive, the Vancouver Sun newspaper reported.

Authorities presumed McDermott had fallen overboard when he disappeared off the California coast in 2005 after ending a nine-year relationship with the Australian beauty; however, his body was never found.

Philip Klein, lead detective in the search, said that they had "concluded beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. McDermott is alive."

The investigators say they found McDermott living in Mexico under his birth name. E! Online reported.

"Mr. McDermott's wishes, according to his counsel, is not to be ‘hounded' any longer by investigators or the media," Klein said.

Since his disappearance, there has been speculation McDermott staged his death so his son could cash in a $150,000 life insurance policy.
