Director Quentin Tarantino and leading man Brad Pitt scored big at the box office, earning $37.6 million in ticket sales, with their retelling of history in the film 'Inglourious Basterds.'

This is Tarantino's biggest opening ever, beating 'Kill Bill -- Vol. 2' that made $25.1 million in it's opening weekend, studio estimates report. The Nazi-era movie follows a group of Jewish-American soldiers whose mission is to take down a group of Nazis. In addition to Pitt, Diane Kruger and "The Office" actor B.J. Novak also star in the film.

Coming in at No. 2 at the weekend box office was the alien sci-fi thriller 'District 9,' pulling in $18.9 million.
