Larry Walker, former director of art and design at Georgia State University and an active gallery artist, is the recipient of the 2016 Nexus Award, the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center announced Thursday.

A professor emeritus at Georgia State University since 2000, Walker has an extensive exhibition history.

He has been the subject of over 40 solo exhibitions and has participated in over 200 group exhibitions since 1971. His work is in the collections of the High Museum in Atlanta, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia and The Studio Museum in Harlem, among others.

Since 2010 the Nexus Award has been granted to seven individuals, including Michael Rooks of the High Museum and Susan Bridges of Whitespace Gallery.

According to the Atlanta Contemporary, the award is given to acknowledge individuals, groups or organizations that have made significant contributions to the contemporary arts landscape.

The public reception for the 2016 Nexus Award will be held on Saturday, August 27, in conjunction with the Contemporary's Art Party, a fund-raiser intended to support free admission at the Contemporary.

Donald Trump's administration deployed the military to Washington, D.C., in the name of fighting crime, and in an Aug. 11 news conference he mentioned the possibility of military being sent to other large American cities, all of which are led by Black, Democratic mayors. And while Atlanta wasn't included in Trump's list, the city fits that profile under Mayor Andre Dickens. (Photo Illustration: Philip Robibero / AJC | Source: Getty)
