The never-ending discussion about the Civil War just got a little smarter in Sandy Springs.
The app for smart phones and iPads takes its user around the north Fulton County city’s Civil War sites, including river crossings, strategic ridge lines, historic homes and graveyards.
Matt Greene, the CEO of Populace, a Carrollton company that develops tourist apps for a number of Georgia communities, said the tour idea came during brainstorming with the nonprofit Heritage Sandy Springs, which wants to promote the area.
“We sat down and realized they had all this great Civil War information and had been spending money on these little pamphlets for years that did not do it justice,” Greene said.
The app has an interactive map, historic photos, driving directions and audio narratives.
Greene, a former real estate developer, began teaching himself programming after the real estate collapse. His business has grown slowly, and he now develops games and apps, focusing on local tourism.
The Sandy Springs Civil War app has been out about two weeks, and more than 800 people have downloaded it, he said.
The app is free on the iTunes store.
