Ze’ Potts started with an existing floor plan in Major’s Ridge, a new home community in Cumming, to create her vision for a home offering the best use of space for her lifestyle and design aesthetic.

She increased the size of the windows in the living room, so she could look out onto her Buddha statuary, garden and the woods beyond her backyard. She added a row of built-in bookshelves to the second floor hallway, changing the placement of the bedroom doors. The changes continued throughout the home.

“The builder had to make new plans for my house,” she said.

Snapshot

Residents: Ze' Potts, who previously owned Atlanta Staging & Organizing Concepts, and her husband, David

Location: Cumming's Major's Ridge neighborhood

Size: About 3,500 square feet, four bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths

Year built and bought: 2010

Builder: Lowe Properties

Architectural style: Traditional

Favorite architectural feature: The built-in bookcases in the upstairs hallway, which were not part of the original floor plan. To accommodate the bookcases into the design, she took a couple of feet from each bedroom and moved the location of the bedroom doors.

Interior design style: Everyday chic

Favorite interior design feature: Mixing finds from yard sales and thrift stores with new furniture and accessories from stores such as Ballard Designs and Z Gallerie and manufacturers such as Thomasville and Bassett. "This house feels so peaceful. That's what everybody was telling me. I thought, well, that's the best thing anybody can tell me," Ze' Potts said.

Favorite outdoor feature: Her backyard, where she placed Buddha statues (a stone wall was added). A patio and covered space offer spots for outdoor living; an attached shed provides additional storage and privacy between neighbors.

Effective entryway: The staircase creates a dramatic effect in the entryway, which is styled with a bench from World Market, a zebra rug from a yard sale and a chandelier from Progressive Lighting. Instead of a table in the entryway, she placed a large mirror from Z Gallerie.
