Former Falcon Tony Gonzalez joins CBS's 'NFL Today' pre-show

Recently retired Atlanta Falcon Tony Gonzalez has signed on to be part of CBS Sports as an NFL analyst.

He will be working on "The NFL Today," the CBS Sunday pregame show, and Showtime’s "Inside the NFL."

Gonzalez, a tight end in the NFL for 17 years, told the AJC Tuesday how happy he is about this opportunity: “I talked to all of the networks out there and gauged their interest and CBS was the one that I felt most comfortable with. I felt like that they really wanted me to come work with them and be part of that pre-game show. I’m happy as all get out to be a part of it.”

He plans to be frank in speaking about his former colleagues.

“That’s part of getting comfortable in front of the camera and really showing them my personality. I’m going to be a little bit more honest and truthful in a fair way. I’m not the type of guy to call people out. But if I see something and I think it needs to be said, I’ll have no problem saying it.”

Gonzalez is the NFL’s all-time leader in touchdowns (111) and yards (15,127) by a tight end.

Two "NFL Today" regulars are departing: Dan Marino and Shannon SharpeJames Brown and analysts Bill Cowher and Boomer Esiason remain. A fourth analyst will be hired as well.
