It's called the "back to school" sales tax holiday, but there are some items on the list that no parent should be buying for their schoolkid.
Lingerie, garter belts and girdles are among the items that Georgians can buy without paying the state sales tax during the holiday, which starts at midnight Friday and ends midnight on Sunday.
So are some other purchases that are probably not on your kid’s back-to-school shopping list: neckties, corsets, rollerblades, baby blankets, reusable diapers, weightlifting belts.
The reason why: Lawmakers wrote in an exemption for clothing, including footwear, with a sales price of $100 or less. And apparently that’s a wide enough definition to include costumes but not costume masks, bowties but not cufflinks. (For the record, it also doesn’t include fanny packs and wigs.)
The holiday also covers computers and software with a sales price of $1,000 or less and school supplies under $20. Gov. Nathan Deal’s office estimates it will cost Georgia’s coffers/save shoppers about $74.5 million.
