CLEVELAND - So much for a scripted convention.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's striking snub of Donald Trump - and the cascade of boos that erupted from the convention floor - has all but destroyed the Republican National Convention's efforts to portray a united front.
Already, the party's only living presidents and its past nominees had refused to show up for Trump's coronation. Now we have his most formidable former opponent spurning his party's nominee on prime-time TV. And lest you forget, another past adversary, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, sent only a video recording of himself to Cleveland. The host state's governor, John Kasich, seems to be everywhere but Quicken Loans Arena.
Some in Georgia's GOP delegation, much like the state's GOP, remain torn over Trump. Cruz finished runner-up to Trump in Georgia's March 1 primary, but Cruz supporters won a majority of delegate slots in the first round of grassroots meetings in April. The hard feelings, and memories of Trump's scathing insults about Cruz and his family, still linger.
