Texas Sen. Ted Cruz nearly blew the lid off the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland last night when he used his prime time address to do anything but endorse Republican nominee Donald Trump. He was essentially booed offstage, and the former GOP presidential candidate doubled down on Thursday morning, subjecting himself to jeers from even his home state delegation.
All of that will certainly make Cruz’s previously-scheduled visit to Newnan on Friday evening all the more interesting, right?
As we told you earlier, he'll be at the Newnan Centre at 6 p.m. hosting a "Rally for Freedom" for state Sen. Mike Crane, who's running in the hotly contested July 26 runoff to replace U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland in the 3rd congressional District.
Things were already starting to heat up in western Georgia earlier in the day on Wednesday, hours before Cruz's stunning prime time snub. The Georgia chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police said it was mulling holding a counter-rally outside of the event in protest of Cruz's involvement in Crane's campaign — given the state senator's past remarks on no-knock warrants.
Now we wonder what changes, if anything, after Cruz’s bombshell Cleveland appearance. We reached out to the Crane campaign to see, and were told the visit is still on. The Crane campaign also sent this response to the Texas senator’s speech:
"Last night, Ted Cruz offered the most stirring defense of liberty and the strongest indictment of Hillary Clinton's policies we've yet heard in this campaign. That's why I am following his advice, voting my conscience, and whole-heartedly supporting Donald Trump for President."
The campaign of Crane's opponent, former West Point Mayor Drew Ferguson, also took the occasion to troll. From spokesman Dan McLagan:
"Twenty-four hours ago, Ted Cruz was likely trying to figure out how to skip coming to Georgia and crossing a police picket line. Today, Mike Crane is probably trying to figure out if anyone would notice if he just 'forgot' to pick Cruz up at the airport."
