New poll has Ossoff, Handel neck-and-neck in 6th District runoff

A new poll out Sunday shows Georgia's high-profile runoff for the 6th District congressional seat remains a dead heat.

Florida-based Gravis Marketing released the results of a new survey that shows Democrat Jon Ossoff leading Republican Karen Handel 47 percent to 45 percent with just more than a month left before the June 20 runoff.

Ossoff's advantage is within the poll's 3.3 percentage point margin of error, however, meaning the race remains a tossup. The poll was conducted May 8-10.

Of note: 8 percent of those surveyed in parts of Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton counties remain undecided. Also, of those who didn't vote in the first round in April, 53 percent said they'll vote for Ossoff in the runoff.

A poll earlier this month conducted for WSB-TV showed Handel leading Ossoff 49 percent to 47 percent.

The 6th District race to replace Republican Tom Price, now serving as President Donald Trump's Health and Human Services secretary has been a dozy. The total cost of the race now exceeds $30 million, easily making it the most expensive U.S. House contest on record. The previous record, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, was a 2012 Florida contest that cost nearly $29.6 million.

Just to put that in perspective: It only cost $16.6 million to rebuild the two I-85 bridges damaged by fire in March.
