It isn't exactly an October surprise, but a new campaign issue has cropped up in the closing weeks of Georgia's gubernatorial contest: The plight of suspended Georgia running back Todd Gurley.

Democrat Jason Carter, a UGA law school grad, made it abundantly clear on Twitter this evening that he backs Gurley, who is in his second week of an indefinite suspension. The school is probing his relationship with memorabilia dealers to try to determine if he broke NCAA rules.

Eagle-eyed readers will note that Carter is standing in front of a program commemorating a game between Georgia and Mercer, Gov. Nathan Deal's alma mater. The governor's campaign had its own snappy response:
