Former President Jimmy Carter won't be traveling to Nepal to build houses for Habitat for Humanity after all.

The Georgia-based nonprofit said Thursday in a statement that the Nov. 1-6 trip to Nepal was canceled due to a shortage of fuel and other supplies in the country amid civil unrest.

It was to be the 91-year-old's first international trip since he revealed that melanoma cancer found in his liver had also spread to his brain. He has already undergone at least three cancer treatments, and doctors had cleared him for the overseas journey.

Carter said in a statement:

"While I am disappointed that we are unable to build in Nepal due to such uncertain circumstances, Rosalynn and I understand and support Habitat's decision. We will keep the people of Nepal in our prayers and ask everyone to do the same. We look forward to our ongoing work with Habitat and continuing to help shine the light on the need for affordable housing."
