This month's Georgia Republican convention in Athens is on its way to becoming a cattle-call for potential presidential candidates.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will speak at a May 15 at a breakfast hosted by Secretary of State Brian Kemp. He'll later speak at a luncheon in Atlanta hosted by House Speaker David Ralston (here's the invite secured by our friends at Peach Pundit).
Christie's speech is technically not part of the GOP convention, which starts later in the afternoon, but many GOP honchos will be there. The Republican, of course, is in the news for other reasons today: Two of his allies were indicted after a federal investigation into lane closings of the George Washington Bridge.
Another presidential hopeful, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, is also doing the Atlanta fundraiser-convention speech combo that day. He'll speak to Republican delegates around 3 p.m. on the day of the convention.
Kemp credits his push for a regional SEC primary for the attention, saying that "likely candidates for president are beginning to realize that the road to the White House runs through Georgia."
