The daughter of former Gov. Roy Barnes has her eye on a judgeship.
Allison Barnes Salter, a managing partner in the Barnes Law Group, said she will run for an open seat on the Cobb County State Court bench.
"We are very proud of Allison and look forward to enthusiastically supporting her," read a post on the law firm's website. "More details to come soon!"
Salter worked at the Cobb County Solicitor General's office and clerked for U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash before she joined the family's law firm. Her husband, John Salter, is also a partner with the firm.
The former governor opened the law firm in 2003, shortly after he was defeated by Republican Sonny Perdue. He said at the time he was particularly excited his daughter was joining him, adding that " I've hoped for this since the day she decided to become a lawyer."
Among the high-profile cases she's handled involved a lengthy court battle between the mistress of a late Marietta millionaire and his heirs. She also was one of Hillary Clinton's earliest supporters in Georgia in 2008.
Her father briefly put his comeback bid on hold in 2010 after a teenager drove his Porsche head-on into a minivan carrying Salter and two of her three daughters. The three passengers in the minivan recovered; the teenager behind the wheel died.
There are at least four open judicial seats in Cobb County, setting off a frenzy for the open spots.
The Daily Report on Tuesday reported that State Court Judge Irma Glover told her colleagues she won't seek another term. Two other state court judges are set to retire at the end of 2016. And a superior court judge is also set to hang up her robes for good.
