A prominent abortion rights group on Wednesday endorsed Nikema Williams and Jen Jordan in their campaigns for open seats in the state Senate next month.
NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia director Laura Simmons said the group backed the two candidates because they are “champions who will stand up and fight against any attempts to tread on the basic reproductive rights of Georgia women and families.”
Both candidates face crowded fields for the Nov. 7 special election.
Jordan is one of three Democrats – and eight candidates overall – vying to replace Hunter Hill after he resigned to run for governor. Her chief Democratic opponent, Jaha Howard, was narrowly defeated in November. The district, which includes parts of Atlanta and east Cobb, is one of the most competitive in Georgia.
Williams is aiming for a solidly-blue Atlanta-based seat once held by Vincent Fort, who is running for Atlanta mayor. She faces three other Democrats and one Republican in that crowded race.
NARAL has tried to become a force early in Georgia elections. The national group endorsed the gubernatorial bid of Democrat Stacey Abrams, a former leader of the party's caucus in the state House, in August.
