In celebration of what would have been Gregg Allman's 70th birthday Dec. 8 comes the release of a striking video for "Song for Adam," from Allman's final album, "Southern Blood."
The song, a cover of the 1972 Jackson Browne ballad, features Allman’s longtime friend Browne on background vocals. During the recording of “Adam” earlier this year, Allman became so emotional singing the final verse because it reminded him of his brother Duane that his voice broke and he left the studio.
Allman anticipated returning to re-record the song, but that never happened.
In an interview at the time of the release of "Southern Blood," producer Don Was talked to the AJC about the song.
“(Gregg) stopped singing in the middle of the song; he couldn’t sing the next two lines. The plan would have been to fix it and get the last couple of lines in. But what was unintentional is that the song also referred to Gregg. Not only was his life cut short, but he literally stopped singing in the middle of the song. It was a fitting exit.”
The video, directed by Erica Alexandria Silverman, stars Zach Chance (Jamestown Revival), Yates Robertson, Zoe Graham, and Johnny McPhail and was filmed in Texas.
Allman died in May from complications due to liver cancer.
