“A Night with Janis Joplin,” the Broadway production which earned a Tony nomination for its star, is headed on tour.
The show will hit 34 cities, including the Fox Theatre at 6:30 p.m. April 17.Tickets are $39-$79.50 and on sale now via the venue box office, www.foxtheatre.org or by calling 855-285-8499.
“Joplin” stars Mary Bridget Davies in the starring role. The rock belter has toured with Joplin’s original band, Big Brother & The Holding Company, as well as blues guitarist Robert Lockwood Jr.
In 2014, Davies was nominated for a Tony for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical – a few months after the musical closed on Broadway and a move to an off-Broadway theater was abruptly canceled 48 hours before showtime.
The rock musical, which has the blessing of Joplin’s estate, was conceived, written, and directed by Randy Johnson and features choreography by Patricia Wilcox and musical direction by Tyler Evans.
The thrust of the show celebrates the music of Joplin and her influences – Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simon and Bessie Smith. Joplin standards “Piece of My Heart,” “Cry Baby” and “Me and Bobby McGee” are all part of the production.
