If you haven't been reading the web magazine "Bitter Southerner," you should be. It reflects a degree of knowing thoughtfulness about the American South and the world around us that is much too rare and much too necessary these days.

And if you haven't read editor Chuck Reece's latest piece, "Gregg Allman's Last Ride," about the making of Allman's last studio album, then you can look forward to a fine introduction to the quality of work that "Bitter Southerner" has been producing for several years now.

Finally, if you want a taste of what Gregg's last labor of love has produced, I don't think you can't top the melancholy grand adieu that is "My Only True Friend":
