Back in my days of hanging out in places like the Star Bar and The Point in Little Five Points, my favorite bands were country-rock and rock-a-billy outfits such as "Southern Culture on the Skids" and "The Drive-by Truckers." They were highly creative, had a sense of humor about themselves and also were damn fine musicians. The crowds at their shows were highly entertaining in their own right.

Jason Isbell, one of the products of that scene, has since become one of the hottest singer-songwriters on the planet. He's headlining the schedule at Parklife at Piedmont Park on Sunday,  and here he is playing his poignant "Alabama Pines," about dealing with the consequences of a breakup:
