As in, rhymes with "Tom Dooley"???
Yes. But bear with me. Take a listen to this version of the classic folk song by a Scottish performer by the name of Lonnie Donegan. The Kingston Trio, it ain't.
Donegan's style -- which he described as an amalgam of styles experienced on a trip through the United States -- became known in the UK as "skiffle." Donegan was "the king of skiffle". Skiffle inspired a whole generation of post-WWII British kids in places such as Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool. Among them were boys by the name of McCartney, Lennon, Harrison and Starkey. Donegan was their first hero, their role model. When he played Liverpool, they were in the audience, awestruck.
Listen again to the latter half of "Tom Dooley," the rhythms and the guitar work, and see what you hear. That's a revolution in the offing ....
