Peach State presents heady 'Elixir'
Having performed "The Elixir of Love" in Tifton, Brunswick and Hayesville, N.C., Peach State Opera brings Gaetano Donizetti’s comic opera home to Atlanta for a performance in English at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Cole Auditorium of Georgia Perimeter College in Clarkston.
Though Peach State is Atlanta based, the company founded in 2009 by artistic director Evelyn Hughes is in its sixth season of taking opera to audiences far from the city, providing at the same time emerging operatic professionals from the metro area and around the Southeast opportunities to perform new roles.
The "Elixir" cast includes Christina Howell singing the role of land owner Adina, with Pedro Carreras as Nemorino, the country bumpkin smitten with her. Ivan Segovia plays itinerant quack Dr. Dulcamara, who provides Nemorino the "elixir" (actually a cheap bottle of wine) with which to woo her. Stephen McCool has the part of dashing Sergeant Belcore, who competes with Nemorino for Adina's affections.

Paddy puts ASO in St. Paddy's mood
Warming up Atlanta for St. Patrick's Day (March 17) a little early, the Chieftains bring a touch of Ireland to Symphony Hall for performances with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The concerts will be led by ASO Assistant Conductor Joseph Young.
More than 50 years after its founding the Chieftains are still led by founder Paddy Moloney, joined by long-time members Kevin Conneff and Matt Molloy.

Johns Creek showcases strings
Johns Creek Symphony will perform a "Virtuoso Strings" program at 8 p.m. March 7. Under the baton of J. Wayne Baughman, the orchestra's string players will be spotlighted in a program including selections from Bach, Bartok, Tchaikovsky and Copland.

Russian sacred music at Glenn Memorial
Creating a gesture of peace at a time of turmoil in Russia and the Ukraine, the Glenn Chancel Choir and soloists of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church will present sacred music of Russia in a concert at 7 p.m. March 8.
The Chancel Choir will sing a cappella works of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, and soloists Cynthia Shepherd, Magdalena Wór and Stephen Ozcomert will perform art songs of Rachmaninov accompanied by Misha Stefanuk. Conducted by Glenn music director Steven Darsey, the one-hour concert will conclude with the audience singing a Russian hymn accompanied by organist Timothy Albrecht.
