Services are scheduled for Saturday for a 5-year-old boy killed on his way home from an after-school program in Decatur last week.

Miles Jenness and his father, Sam, were just a block away from home Sept. 27 when their Toyota Corolla was hit while sitting at a red light at the intersection of Midway Road and South Candler Street. Witnesses to the crash, including a MARTA police officer and an off-duty DeKalb police officer, attempted CPR on the boy, who was found unresponsive in the back seat.

He died two days later at a hospital.

The driver of a Volkswagen Tiguan who hit Jenness’ car continued into the intersection and crashed into a Dodge Caliber, according to Decatur police. Police have accused Michelle Wierson, 52, of Avondale Estates, of driving impaired and said she was “behaving erratically” after the wreck.

She was arrested and faces charges of first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving and battery in connection with the crash and the alleged assault on the off-duty DeKalb officer, among other charges.

The Jenness family will celebrate Miles’ life at a dance party from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at McKoy Park in Decatur. The theme of the celebration is Popsicles and Pokemon in honor of the Winonna Park kindergartner’s favorite things.

"We want to invite any and all people in our community to put some joy back into the world with us," his family said in an obituary published Friday in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

A funeral visitation will precede the celebration from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at A.S. Turner and Sons on North Decatur Road in Decatur.

“His parents, family, friends and community are heartbroken,” his family said. “We love him so much.”
