Both political parties lack great leadership

Former President Donald Trump’s MAGA propaganda implies that we are not great, yet I think this nation has always been a great one — never perfect but driven by perfect ideals.

I historically have voted Republican, but now it seems the GOP has shown even less intelligence when it comes to improving this nation for all citizens and remarkably stubborn resistance to modern social ideas. It blasts “liberal” concepts, yet who fought for American freedom from British oppression centuries ago? “Liberals” did. I’m a military veteran. My father fought in World War II, and his father was an immigrant. The sons of immigrants saved the free world. Our nation, the leader of the free world, changes or dies.

I believe there are no great presidential choices now, and both political parties lack the great leadership our nation has shown in past decades.

‘Post-truth’ politics will lead to chaos

The ongoing normalization of lies and deceit has led some pundits to claim we have entered a time of “post-truth” politics. Many of the lies are so far-fetched it doesn’t seem possible that people could believe them. From “the immigrants are eating your house pets” to the Democrats’ weather control machine, Republican disinformation makes a mockery of the truth. You can forget truth. The only thing that matters is loyalty to your leader.

The lies are effective. The utterly baseless “big lie” that the 2020 election was rigged has undermined public confidence in what has always been a trusted democratic institution. Republicans used it to justify purging voter registration rolls with questionable intent and attempting to impose confusing, mostly obstructionist election rules designed to make voting more difficult.

But if truth becomes whatever you want it to be, informational chaos results, making reason and critical thinking, which should form the basis for voting decisions in a democracy, both impossible and irrelevant.
