Your supermarket apples may be 10 months old

BEIJING - JANUARY 27: A shopper chooses granny smith apples at the newly-opened Tesco supermarket on January 27, 2007 in Beijing, China. The UK giant opened its first own-brand supermarket in Beijing after investing in 46 stores across China under the name of its Chinese partner, Le Gou, which translates as "Happy Shopping". The apples you pick at the grocery store aren’t as fresh you may think. In fact, they could be up to 10 months old.

Why is that? Most apples go through an extensive process before making it to your local Publix.
Apples that will be purchased by December go into regular refrigeration, where they are kept at 34-38 degrees.
As for apples that are sold later, they go into controlled atmosphere storage rooms. There, the temperatures and oxygen levels are lower.
But not to worry. If handled properly, the nutritional value will still be there.
