The University of Georgia will dedicate the new Rutherford Hall June 27.

The dorm, which is near the intersection of Cedar Street and Sanford Drive, replaces the previous hall that was built in 1939 by the federal Work Projects Administration (WPA).

Preservation groups pleaded with UGA to keep the old building, but officials said tearing it down and building a new one was the safest and best financial option.

The new dorm has 261 beds, 100 more than its predecessor, and an additional 80,000 square feet of space.

The new design pays tribute to the original hall. Two fireplace mantels were retrieved from the old building and several four-paneled doors taken from student rooms serve as a wall treatment at the entrance of the new multipurpose room.
