The University of Georgia will open an office in Atlanta as part of President-elect Jere Morehead’s plan to place more emphasis on economic development.

The Atlanta office will allow UGA to have a stronger link with businesses and the Georgia Department of Economic Development, said Morehead, the current provost who becomes president July 1. The new office also will provide communities and development authorities with more access to the university’s research and other services, officials said.

As part of the economic development redesign, Margaret Wagner Dahl will become associate vice president for economic development, Morehead announced. Dahl will continue to lead the Georgia BioBusiness Center, which has helped launch more than 30 companies.

Morehead said the school will also make Thinc. at UGA Entrepreneurial Week an annual event. The program, organized by the research office, works with students and faculty who are interested in becoming entrepreneurs.
