A bill approved by the Georgia Senate on Thursday would extend the length of time a driver’s license is valid from five years to eight years.

House Bill 806, sponsored by Rep. Kevin Tanner, R-Dawsonville, also extends expiration dates for identification cards to eight years.

The Senate also amended the legislation to include language from another bill that allows certified law enforcement officers to use their police vehicles while working off-duty that required vested police powers. Police vehicles could not be used for off-duty jobs at any political function.

The law enforcement provision had been included in a separate Senate bill sponsored earlier this session by Sen. Tyler Harper, R-Ocilla, chairman of the chamber’s public safety committee.

Another Senate amendment to the House bill would move the Georgia Driver’s Education Commission from the state Department of Drivers Services to the drivers serves to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

Although approved by the Senate with a 47-2 vote, the amended bill must go back to the House for consideration before the legislative session ends tonight.
