Wood could return to school construction

Georgia schoolhouses could return to the fundamentals, at least in terms of construction, under legislation headed to Gov. Nathan Deal’s desk.

The state House on Thursday gave unanimous approval to Senate Bill 301, by Sen. Fran Millar, R-Atlanta, that removes a ban on the use of wood framing in school construction.

Rep. Mike Cheokas, R-Americus, who sponsored the bill in the House, said Georgia is one of only four states that bar wood from school construction.

Supporters of the legislation said schools would still meet all building code requirements, and should a school district choose to use wood framing, it would save money.
