Federal immigration authorities detained a record number of people in 2012 at 477,523, marking an 11 percent increase from 2011, according to a report issued this week by the U.S. Homeland Security Department.
Of those detained in 2012, most – or 64 percent — were from Mexico. Guatemala ranked second at about 11 percent.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement holds people facing deportation in two privately-run detention centers in Georgia: the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin and the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla. Nashville-based Corrections Corp. of America announced last month that it was closing the North Georgia Detention Center in Gainesville. CCA cited a dwindling number of ICE detainees.
