The House unanimously passed a food service bill Tuesday exempting nonprofits from needing a state permit to sell food at short-term events.

House Bill 101, sponsored by Rep. Bubber Epps, R-Dry Branch, makes it easier for organizations such as churches and other nonprofits to hold fundraisers that last 120 hours or less. Until now, nonprofit organizations had to fulfill permit requirements intended for restaurants, he said. The bill passed 162-0.

Current law does allow for similar exemptions for food sold at fairs and festivals. Nonprofit organizations must still comply with the permitting requirements of local governments.
