The Georgia General Assembly at a glance for Jan. 9, 2018:

Nothing doing: Georgia lawmakers will report to the state Capitol on Tuesday, but they won't have much to do (other than despair over Georgia's overtime loss to Alabama in the college football championship game). One committee meeting is scheduled: the House Ways & Means Subcommittee on Public Finance & Policy at 2 p.m. The House convenes at 1 p.m.; the Senate begins at 10 a.m.

Burning a day: By counting Tuesday as an official business day, senators and representatives running for election are one day closer to the end of the 40-day legislative session. State law prohibits campaign fundraising during the session.

On the record: "We shouldn't be in an all-out rush just to finish the session. ... We're here to work, and we maintain the Senate should be working and continuing the business that's important to the people of Georgia." — House Majority Leader Jon Burns, R-Newington
