More than 1,000 demonstrators marched through downtown Atlanta Wednesday morning in support of overhauling the nation’s immigration system.

The Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights coordinated the rally, and more than 40 other civil and immigrant rights groups were expected to attend.

Demonstrators beat drums, sang and called for a moratorium on deportations. Some also called for a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the country illegally.

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators is expected to introduce comprehensive immigration legislation, perhaps as soon as this week.

The Georgia Capitol Police estimated about 1,500 people had gathered for the Atlanta rally just before 11 a.m. Wednesday. A similar rally was planned for Wednesday afternoon in Washington
