Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer urged Georgia Republicans to “do your job” and vote now for Karen Handel in the GOP primary for U.S. Senate.
About 50 supporters packed a back room at The Sixes Tavern in Canton to hear Handel and Brewer on the first day of early voting in the May 20 primary.
“I’m a busy person,” Brewer said with a smile. “I did not hesitate for a minute to come out here. You need to do your job.”
The crowd roared in agreement.
Handel’s remarks were part bulldog, part puppy dog. She skewered front-runner David Perdue — without mentioning him by name.
“Even though some in this race might not think so, we know we’re smart enough,” Handel said. It was an obvious reference to Perdue’s remark earlier this month about Handel’s lack of a college diploma.
Perdue’s name wasn’t the only one not to pass Handel or Brewer’s lips. Another name appeared missing as well: that of President Barack Obama. While both women made oblique reference to what they see as an administration lacking in integrity, grit and smarts, neither mentioned Obama — or Obamacare — by name.
Also of note: Before the event began, restaurant staff ushered a young man with a hand held video camera from the private area of the restaurant. The man appeared to be a “tracker” for another campaign or organization. Sen. Josh McKoon, R-Columbus, a major Handel supporter who was on hand Monday, said the tracker works for a Democrat super pac and has been following Handel for months.
