Some of the seafood at Mariscos La Riviera Nayarit on Jimmy Carter Boulevard was not protected from contamination resulting in a failing health score for the Mexican restaurant.

Large containers of whole fish, a container of shrimp and a container of shrimp broth were stored uncovered in a cooler. A bag of raw, unwashed onions and boxes of unwashed fruit were stored over the broth, according to the inspection report.

Employees were observed returning to the kitchen from outside and immediately going to work, touching clean equipment without washing hands, the Gwinnett County health inspector said. A server touched the meat of a raw oyster with bare hands. It was discarded.

Large batches of broth were discarded because they weren’t at safe temperatures. Two batches of vegetable broth had been placed on the steam table to reheat, but the temperature never rose to a safe level, the inspector said. And shrimp broth was thrown away because it had not cooled quickly enough.

Mariscos La Riviera Nayarit, 5385 Jimmy Carter Blvd., Norcross, scored 28/U on the routine inspection, falling from previous scores of 82/B and 90/A.

Because the restaurant had more than nine critical violations and a failing score, the food permit was suspended for on-site staff training.

Points were also taken off because butane fuel, a blow torch, Tums and pain relievers were stored near food items. Clean buckets and other containers were stored on the ground next to the hand sink. They were removed and cleaned.

Mariscos La Riviera Nayarit will be re-inspected.
