Bullpen Rib House, the aptly named barbecue joint near Turner Field, had numerous food safety violations during a recent inspection, including uncovered foods that were exposed to contaminants.

Also, numerous gnats and other flying insects were observed near the condiment service area, the soda machines and in the kitchen, according to the report.

Bullpen Rib House, 735 Pollard Blvd., Atlanta, scored 43/U on the routine inspection, dropping from 92/A received on the previous two inspections.

The inspector said this routine health visit was initiated by a customer complaint, but did not include details of the complaint in the report.

In other violations, an employee was observed handling soiled equipment then engaging in food preparation without washing hands. Another employee was engaging in food prep without wearing a hair restraint.

Some food items stored in a walk-in freezer were not date-marked for disposal. And one date-marked food item in another cooler had expired in February and should have been thrown away.

The can opener and meat slicer were dirty with food debris, and there was no thermometer for the reach-in cooler.

The restaurant was also operating without a current food service permit, the inspector said.

Bullpen Rib House will be re-inspected.
