A Gwinnett County health inspector observed rodent droppings on food cans and packages in a dry storage area at Oyster Barn restaurant in Lilburn.
The droppings were also on shelves and floors, and rodent traps had been set out in an exterior storage area, the inspector said.
Oyster Barn, 411 Beaver Ruin Road, failed the routine inspection with a score of 64/U. It was the second consecutive failing routine inspection this year. Oyster Barn scored 66/U in late May, then posted 95/A on a follow-up inspection.
Other points were taken off because the restaurant did not have a certified food safety manager on staff. The former manager left after the May inspection and no replacement was made for that position. The inspector said Oyster Barn needed to have this corrected within 10 days either by hiring a new safety manager or enrolling an employee in the training course.
In other code violations, raw meats were not separated from each other or from cooked ready-to-eat foods in storage. Also, foods were not date-marked correctly. Sliced cheese was date-marked to be used from Sept. 26 through Dec. 27 of this year. Refrigerated foods can only be kept seven days unless they are in reduced oxygen packaging.
The restaurant also needed cleaning, according to the inspection report. The ice machine had mold build-up. Grease, debris and dirt had accumulated on the floors throughout the facility, including under and around fryers and cook-line equipment.
Oyster Barn will be re-inspected.
